Bursaries
This year, 12 bursaries of £450 are available.
Bursary applicants:
Your application should be in the form of a Word attachment (not PDF) containing a paper
proposal of 200 words, together with a short unformatted cv in the same file, the entire application being not more than two sides of A4 (the file will be copied and pasted into a composite file, so
please avoid elaborate formatting). Applicants should also arrange for a short message of academic recommendation to be sent independently to the same email address (see above) verifying the
applicant’s academic status and country of residence. Candidates need not specify which bursary they are applying for. They will automatically be considered for any bursary for which they are
eligible. Please be sure to identify your application as a ‘Bursary Application’ in the subject of the email.
Please note that we may award a bursary without having space to include the proposed paper on the
conference programme: such papers may, however, be ‘taken as read’, that is, made available in print form at the conference, if the proposer so chooses.
General Conditions
Bursaries are intended to help students meet the cost of attending the Wordsworth Summer Conference. Holders of bursaries will be so designated on the list of participants or the conference programme. The bursary will be applied in the first instance to conference fees, and the balance to accommodation in the Rydal Hall Youth Centre, with all meals taken at Rydal Hall. Bursars are expected to attend all lectures, papers and conference events, to attend for the full ten days, and to use Youth Centre Accommodation. Acceptance of a bursary implies an undertaking to observe these conditions.
Accommodation for all bursary awardees will be in the Youth Centre bunkhouse across the courtyard at the back of Rydal Hall.
This sleeps up to 29 people split across 4 dormitory-style rooms on the first floor: one 10
bed, one nine 9 bed, one 6 bed and one 4 bed room. For the conference these will be divided into two 5-bed rooms and two 2-bed rooms.
The two smaller dorms are en-suite. The two larger dorms can use the toilets and showers on
the ground floor, where there is also a drying room.
There is a spacious common room on the first floor with sofas, a ping-pong table and a wood
burner. There is also a kitchen, with fridge, cooker, microwave, crockery and cutlery.
During the Summer Conference all of your meals will be provided in Rydal Hall
dining room.
Bed linen will be provided.
Please be aware that all bursary accommodation will be in the Youth Centre and that it is not possible to alter your accommodation after you arrive at Rydal Hall. Your bursary application should confirm that you understand this. If for any reason you think that the Youth Centre accommodation would be unsuitable, you should indicate this on your application.
Please note that we may award a bursary without having space to include the proposed paper on the conference programme: such papers may, however, be 'taken as read', that is, made available in print form at the conference, if the proposer so chooses.
Applications and references must reach proposal.wsc@gmail.com by 29th April, 2024.
Decisions on bursaries will be announced at the earliest
possible date thereafter.
